뭘 해도 괜찮지만 그렇다고 아무거나 해도 괜찮은 건 아니다. 무엇을 할 수 있을까? 할 수 없는 일, 하기 싫은 일, 하면 안 되는 일을 쳐내고 나면 오로지 나와 생활이 남는다. 그러므로 생활에서 규율을 지키는 일은 매우 중요하다. 지적 노동과 육체 노동 사이의 균형을 잃지 않는 것, 나와 내 작업이 타인을 괴롭히지 않는 것, 또 지나친 관념과 장식을 경계해야 한다.
나의 드로잉은 ‘무엇을 할 수 있을까’에서 시작됐다. 출근 후 시간을 정해 그것이 무엇이 됐건 그렸다. 그러나 손으로 만질 수 있는 딱딱한 물건을 떠올리며 그것을 납작한 평면에 그리는 일에는 여러 제약이 따른다. 중력과 재료의 물리적 한계 등을 고려하다 보면 곧 흥미를 잃게 되는 것이다. 그래서 나는 종이 위의 선과 면들을 통제하기를 그만두고 ‘굳이 만들지 않아도 될’ 것들을 자유롭게 그리기 시작했다.
나의 그리기는 5mm 단위로 작은 점이 인쇄된 몰스킨 도티드 노트에서 시작한다. 점과 점을 잇는 직선이나 호(arc)를 하나 그린 뒤 그것에 맞는 도형 하나를 완성한다. 이 도형에 그다음 도형을 이어 그리며 앞서 그린 도형과의 관계나 모양을 생각한다. 그러므로 그리기는 도형을 쌓거나 걸치는 모양을 갖게 된다. 이렇게 모인 도형들에 시트지와 색연필로 재질을 입힌다.
It is fine to do anything, but it doesn’t mean everything is accepted. What can I truly do? Excluding what I cannot, don’t want or am not allowed to do, I am simply left with my own life. In this sense, it is crucial to keep a disciplined routine. I should not lose the balance between intellectual and physical labor, not destroy others myself or by means of my work; also I should beware of excessive conceptualism and decoration.
My drawings began by questioning “what I could do.” After entering my studio each morning, I set a time frame to dedicate myself to drawing whatever. However, reminding myself of something solid and tangible and trying to draw it translated onto the flat surface was a quite limited act. My interest quickly decreased upon considering gravity and physical limitations of material, etc. Therefore, I gave up controlling lines and shapes on paper and started drafting freely what is ‘unnecessary to be made.’
My act of drawing began from Moleskine’s dotted notebook. First, collecting two dots with a line or arc, I accomplish a shape from it. Then from this shape, another shape is drafted, with thoughts on the relation or form it creates with the previous one. In this way, the drawing takes up the form of stackings or assembling. Outlined as such, the shapes gain texture covered with adhesive vinyl sheets and color pencil.
